Exercise 1

Practise gratitude.

What are you grateful for? Take 5 minutes each day to remind yourself of your blessings.

Think of people, things, situations and also your body, your environment, your life.

Make sentences starting with: I thank …

If you can manage this, then give thanks to things that are less pleasant. EVERYTHING HAS A PURPOSE. Things don’t just happen for no reason. If you can manage to deal with your suffering and to look at it in a different way it hasn’t been random. There is also a lesson to be learned!!

Exercise 2

Tell your life’s story.

Your life is precious too!

Now is the time to give shape to the story of your life.

What have you done for yourself and others? What did you like best? Where did you most enjoy spending time? What did you learn and what would you like to pass on?

Realise that it is ALWAYS worthwhile to make your life’s story. Also for yourself!

Exercise 3

Tonglen for yourself. (Developing compassion)

Admit that you are suffering and take your time to do this exercise.

Relax as best you can. Close your eyes or if this is difficult, focus on one particular point in the room.

Be aware of your breathing. Breathe in and out as calmly as possible. Now concentrate on your breathing.

While you breathe in inhale all the pain, anxiety and suffering that you feel.

Imagine that everything will be solved and changed NOW.

Breathe out and imagine that the exhalation is filled with joy, happiness, clarity and peace.

Repeat this and try to stay focussed on the breathing. Keep doing this for as long as you like.

Do you feel any hostility against this exercise?

You can do yourself a huge favour by making a serious effort to do this exercise and to repeat it.

What are you afraid of?
